Sonic Video - 6:20 pm EST
Seth C
It simply does *not* get any better than this. I don't know how they got it, I'm not sure where they got it, but SegaNet managed to attain a video from the Sonic Adventure press conference. It is 15 seconds of 160x120 pixel mpeg joy. Don't worry about the size though, it's very high quality so you can zoom in without it becoming too grainy. I suggest everyone download this, you won't regret it.

Sonic Movie (2.2 Megs, Mpeg Format)

Thank You! - 4:15 am EST
Seth C
We'd like to take the oppurtunity to thank all of you for making us so popular! It's only been 2 1/2 months since the site launched and we've already surpassed 50,000 hits! Hopefully the site will continue to grow and more importantly that we will continue to bring you the best Dreamcast coverage anywhere.

Modem Details - 4:05 am EST
Seth C
SegaDC.com recently had the opportunity to speak with Roland Dunton of Trisignal Communications, the manufacturers of the DC modem, at least in Japan that is. There were a couple of interesting moments in the interview. The main thing being that Sega has 12 games in development that will make use of the modem for multiplayer gaming. 12 titles?? There haven't even been that many announced yet. Sega definately has something great in store for us.

New Godzilla Shots - 3:55 am EST
Seth C
SegaDC.com has supplied us with some new screenshots of Godzilla Generations. They have even more shots than are displayed here, so be sure to check the site out. These new shots actually include various on-screen meters, such as damage % which indicate that they are from a version of the game a bit further into development than the previous screens.

Site Mission - 10:05 pm EST
Seth C
We haven't mentioned what the mission of this site is in quite some time now. Seeing how we've got quite a few new readers since we started a little over 2 months ago, and since we recently moved to our new home, I thought it was about time to mumble pointlessly about where we came from and where we're going. That, plus today was a slow news day. :) But anyway...

First off, as you've probably noticed, we try not to take ourselves too seriously here. When you really get down to it we're a bunch of guys getting paid to do what we'd do for free (okay, so a lot of us *are* doing it for free..) so where could we get off being all serious and smug about everything? We're just a bunch of goof-offs! Second, the site exists for one reason... to make the readers happy. If there is something we're doing you don't agree with, or something you think we could do better, just let us know. Mainly we just want to make sure we don't suck. :)

Finally, expect some changes to the site (this is the part most of you skipped through to I'm sure) over the next couple of months. First, there will be a new forum, which you will definitely like. We're looking for more ways to interact with you, and that's one of them. Also there is our IRC chat room, #DCX on Dalnet... don't forget to stop in. We'll be opening a mailbag/letters section as well as a Q and A section within the next few weeks, barring any unforeseen interuptions. Then there is our upcoming re-design. This one will be new graphics, new layout, the works. We have some great ideas for it, and hopefully you'll like it to.

Okay, I think I've said about as much as I possibly can. Sorry if I bored you to tears, but very few of you read all of it anyway so I doubt that happened. :)

Page Errors - 7:00 pm EST
Seth C
A lot of you probably got page errors for the past 30 minutes or so. There was a reason for that. You see, one of our staff members uploaded the incorrect file to the server. The file he uploaded had nothing to do with the site and caused everyone who tried to come to the site via the front page to be out of luck. Don't worry, we took him outside, tarred, feathered, and hanged him. There shouldn't be any further problems. :)

VR Sports Lineup - 6:55 pm EST
Seth C
According to various sources all over the 'net, Game Informer is claiming that the VR Sports lineup of games will be coming to the Dreamcast. Specifically mentioned were VR Hockey and VR Football, which will be utilizing Shiny's Messiah engine for the characters.

Hudson's New Action/RPG - 6:15 pm EST
Seth C
It's called Elemental Gimmick Gear, or EGG for short. The game reminds me off Steamgear Mash, which was released for the Japanese Saturn near the beginning of it's life. You play as a small 2d robot. Most of the games takes place in a 2d view, sadly it looks almost like a 16-bit title. The 3d boss battles are a bit more impressive, but only slightly. These pictures came from Videogamespot.

High Quality Sonic Images - 10:25 pm EST
Seth C
Yeah I know that a few sites got these pictures up before us, which I apologize for. Today has been rather hectic and time consuming. But, here they are and I do believe they are worth the wait. Each screen is at 640*480 resolution and they look spectacular. Props go out to Dodee over at KEDGE for hooking me up with these shots.

Tired of Microsoft? - 4:20 pm EST
Seth C
Well too bad! It looks like they may be taking an even larger part (yes, even more than the OS and software) in the Dreamcast market. Apparently they are planning peripherals for the system, much the same way the extended their grasp on the PC market. The reason? The DC is rumored to have a USB port, so it would only make sense for MS to extend their line of USB products to the DC, right?

Interview with Bizarre Creations - 4:20 pm EST
Seth C
Dimension-S has posted what is probably the most informative interview with Bizarre Creations yet seen. Here is just a small preview:

DS: The Dreamcast console's capabilities are indeed impressive on paper, rivaling even Sega's most advanced current arcade board (Model 3) in many aspects. However, many systems look good on paper. Having seen the system firsthand, are we going to be shocked and amazed?

BC: I would like to quote our Technical Director on his reaction to the next set of tools, which is almost running at final speed, censored not to offend your readership. He described it as 'F*%$ing Awesome' - and he's a technical cynic! Model 3 is going to be sitting in the corner whimpering, remembering the days when it was No. 1.

If that doesn't catch your attention then nothing will. Be sure to head over there and read the whole interview.

DC United - 4:20 pm EST
Seth C
No, this news story has absolutely nothing to do with that lame US soccer team. It has to do with a new site, DC United. Now, normally I wouldn't post news about a new Dreamcast site... but this one has quite a twist. It's sort of a "guild" for Dreamcast fans. The site is so odd that it actually becomes entertaining. Be sure to check it out for your daily dose of Dreamcast propaganda.

Steve Joins the Staff - 4:20 pm EST
Seth C
Where did Steve come from? No one is quite sure. A couple of days ago he wandered in to the the offices and asked for a job. He looked like he could use some money, so we were kind enough to let him work with us. He'll be our second Lead Editor and hopefully he won't screw things up too much....

Anyone for Some Toejam? - 10:45 pm EST
Seth C
Toejam & Earl on the Dreamcast? It's a very likely possiblity! According to the games' creators, although they do not expect the game to make it near the system's release, they are very much expecting a new Toejam & Earl game on the Dreamcast! Remember when Sega said they planned to resurrect all of their properties on the DC? Well they obviously weren't kidding. So far we have confirmation or strong rumors of Sonic, Virtua Fighter, Ecco the Dolphin, and even Fantasy Zone... can Shinobi and Alex Kidd be far behind?

Sonic Adventure Brochure - 10:15 pm EST
Seth C
You all know that the pictures every site has posted over the past few days have been from the brochure that was handed out at the Sonic Adventure unveiling. Now Game Informer has scanned in the entire brochure in it's original form. I highly suggest you check it out.

We Made a Mistake - 9:45 pm EST
Seth C
And no, we aren't afraid to admit it. Yesterday we told you about a game called "White Illumination". Well, we goofed a bit on the title. No, we don't have a Japanese Correspondent yet (e-mail if you're interested) so we had no way of translating the page on Sega of Japan's site. White Illumination is the same game as To the North, with the official title being "To the North: White Illumination". The goal of this site is to bring you information in the most accurate manner possible. If we make a mistake, please be sure to let us know.

Forbes on PVRSG - 9:35 pm EST
Seth C
If you've been visiting this site for any length of time at all, then you know that the graphics chip in the Dreamcast is the PowerVRSG fron NEC/VideoLogic. So, just how poerful is this little chip? Forbes recently had an article on it, and this is what they said:

"Sega's new accelerator will be the PowerVR, designed by VideoLogic, a small British chip design studio, and produced by Japan's NEC Corp. How dazzling? The chip, etched in 0.25-micron detail state-of-the-art for graphics processors- fits 10 million transistors onto a space about the size of a fingernail. And these chips will cost Sega as little as $30 or so each, which is how cheap an accelerator chip has to be to compete in the game market. VideoLogic and NEC claim that the PowerVR's new way of creating three-dimensional graphics is so powerful that it can give a game player costing a few hundred dollars the kind of graphics you can get today only from a $20,000 arcade system."

As Gordon over at the DC Tech Pages added, that's a lot of transistors. More than the Riva TNT which has 7 million, and even more than the Dreamcast's own SH-4, which only has 3.1 million! Also mentioned was that the PVRSG has several megabits of on-chip data caches, altogether totalling 256 KB.

Capcom is Impressed - 5:55 pm EST
Seth C
Apparently some industry insiders claim one of the orignal team members of the Street Fighter series has been experimenting with the Dreamcast. He agrees with Yu Suzuki about the system's ability to produce 2d graphics... as he said, "DC has a capability of applying 3D special effects on 2D games with ease of programming." It's also being reported that one of the ways he experimented with the Dreamcast's abilities was by doing a quick port of Red Earth. The resulting game was near arcade perfect. All of this bodes well for a translation of Street Fighter 3 and other Capcom arcade titles.

Monster Breed Interview - 5:35 pm EST
Seth C
In a recent issue of Sega Saturn Magazine, they sat down and interviewed the producers of Monster Breed. Here is just a small portion of the interview:

SSM: About how many polygons are used in the modeling of the monsters that we're seeing?

MB Producers: Based on what we know about the CPU power and the graphics chip, it's 5000 ploygons per monsters, though there may be modifications depending on the effects and background we're using. Though it's not a perfect software developing environment we're working with.

Want to read the rest? Then head over to Dimension-S.

Explanation of Server Problems - 5:00 pm EST
Seth C
Looks like the problem was worse than we first expected. As it turns out, the server was down due to someone hacking in to it. That is why no one could connect to the site for around an hour again today. We're terribly sorry for the inconvenience... it annoys us just as much as it does you.

Network Downtime - 9:45 pm EST
Seth C
We'd like to apologize for the hour of downtime that the site just went through. The network administrator was performing server upgrades. We'll try our best to let you know ahead of time before any further downtime occurs. We will now resume regular updates.

Sonic Adventure Sequences - 4:15 pm EST
Seth C
These pictures show off some of the automated storyline sequences in Sonic Adventure and show how they are interwoven with actual gameplay. The first sequence is Amy in some sort of prison cell. The second is of Sonic flying in on his prop plane to attack Robotnik's flying fortress. The third one is Sonic's confrontation with Chaos. The fourth scene is the flying fortress on it's own. The fifth and final one is Sonic snowboarding. These new shots came from Game-Online.

Japanese Correspondent Needed - 3:30 pm EST
Seth C
This is a reminder to all of our Japanese readers to let you know that we need your help! 10% of our readership comes from Japan, yet no one has responded to our request. We are looking for a Japanese Correspondent to cover things like the upcoming TGS. If you live in Japan and have a strong love for all things Sega, then you are just what we are looking for! Please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail at webmaster@dc-extreme.com if you're interested.

Sega Rally 2 Confirmed - 3:15 pm EST
Seth C
At the recent PC Expo in New York, in which Sega was showing off all of their PC titles, someone let something slip. Scott Hawkins of Sega of America was asked about the PC conversion of Sega Rally 2, this was his response:

"As the first game transferred from the arcade to the PC and then to our new Dreamcast, it's a big step in the right direction for us."

Let's just hope the DC conversion is a *lot* more accurate than the one for the PC.

Wanna Chat? - 7:50 pm EST
Seth C
We want to interact with our readers as much as possible. In an effort to make that possible, we have set up an IRC channel on DalNet. Just join any Dalnet server and then join #DCX to start chatting. We're hard at work getting a java IRC client set up for those of you without one... just be patient. We hope to see you there!

Panzer Dragoon Drei - 7:25 pm EST
Seth C
It's no longer a rumor. The Japanese gaming media is reporting that Team Andromeda is already hard at work on a the next game in the Panzer Dragoon series. It won't be another RPG. They are going back to their roots to produce another shooter with that special TA touch.

Dreamcast on Demand - 4:45 pm EST
Seth C
Would you like to have an entire Dreamcast library at your fingertips? To be able to download any game you want and play it whenever you want? It may become a reality. Apparently DSS, the satellite programming provider, is talking to Sega about providing games on demand via their satellite network. It would likely take a bit of time to download the game, especially considering it couldn't all fit in RAM and would have to pause between levels for loading, but it would be worth it to get incredibly cheap games and never get stuck with a bad game again.

Dark Savior 2 Rumor - 3:55 pm EST
Seth C
The guys over at LunarNet (which I'll include a link to so Rudo won't throw a fit :) are reporting that Climax is going to announce Dark Savior 2 for the Dreamcast. I'm probably one of the few people that completely enjoyed the first game in the series. The idea of the same story with multiple parallels intrigued me, and added a certain sci-fi feel to the game. Perhaps they will go back to their roots and make the game more like Landstalker.

White Illumination - 4:35 am EST
Seth C
Dreamcast news that isn't about Sonic Adventure? No really, I'm serious. Sega, in conjunction with with Hudson and Red, is working on a new dating simulator type game for the Dreamcast. The game is scheduled to be available February of '99 in Japan. Don't expect to see it in America though... a game based on seducing teenage girls just wouldn't go over too well here.

Sonic - Not at the Launch? - 3:50 am EST
Seth C
Some sites are reporting that Sonic Adventure has been delayed until December or January. This isn't quite accurate as the release date of the game was never set to begin with! Apparently people assumed it would be a launch title and now consider this a delay, but I never expected the game before Christmas '98. Sonic Adventure is very important to the US launch, but what is more important to the Japanese market is that the game spends the needed time in development so that it can create as large an impact as possible. Also it's important to note that this will be one of the first games Yuji Naka has been given all the time he needs to work on a game instead of rushing to get the title completed. Imagine NiGHTS if Naka-san were given enough time to add more stages...

New Staff Member! - 2:30 am EST
Seth C
As you can tell, this is an exciting time for us here at Dreamcast Extreme... and things just keep getting better! Although it went unannounced, a few days ago someone new joined our staff and we hope you will all join us in welcoming "Nishi#11". She is our "Technology Analyst"... what that basically means is that when it comes to technology, she's a lot smarter than the rest of us. :)

We Moved! - 1:50 am EST
Seth C
Welcome to Dreamcast Extreme here at our new home. Hopefully everyone managed to make the transition to the new URL just fine... oh, and don't forget to update those bookmarks! We tried our best to make sure all the links point to the correct place, but if you find an outdated link, please be sure to e-mail me. A special thanks goes to Battle Zone Games Network for hosting us, be sure to cruise on over to their site and give it a look. We've got some great stuff coming up for you this week, so stay tuned!

Meet the Cast - 3:50 pm EST
Seth C
The picture on the left is of course, Sonic. The one and only blue dude with a 'tude. On the left is Amy Rose, who made her first appearance in Sonic CD. She seems to have a bit of a crush on Sonic.

You all know Knuckles! He's the Echidna from "down under". In this game not only can he float and climb, but he can burrow underground. Knuckles has somewhat of a love/hate relationship with Sonic, and you will even fight each other at one point in time. Why? Because Knuckles is the guardian of the Emeralds, and Sonic is trying to grab them to keep them out of Robotnik's (or Eggman's) hands.

The guy on the left is Big.... I suppose that's the only thing they could think of to describe him. He seems pretty laid back, notice the fishing rod he has in hand. On the right is E-102. He's a robot that you can play, but he's not a good guy, so Sonic had better watch out!

For some reason, there is no art for Tails, but he is a playable character. Each character has 6 acts, but apparently some acts you get a choice of characters. Who you choose and what you do effects the game... there are 6 possible endings! Don't forget to click each character to see the art in full size, plus that way you can read a description of each character.

Over 40 high Quality Sonic Images! - 7:45 am EST
Seth C
Click here to see over 40 high quality Sonic images!
The pictures had to be moved from the main page, it was simply taking too long to load, but click the link to see them all collected in one place.

The Blue Blur is BACK! - 7:35 am EST
Seth C
Quite literally, actually. Check out these two shots of Sonic's new spin dash to see what I mean. There is now a bright flash as Sonic jets off and then a blue motion blur as he begins to ricochet off of everything in site.

A-Life/VMS - 6:20 am EST
Seth C
Some of the confusion around the VMS unit and Sonic Adventure has been cleared up. When I watched the Sonic Forum for the second time it was much better quality, which allowed me to actually see more of the show. One of the things I got to see explained was what part the VMS would play in Sonic Adventure. Remember the NiGHTS A-Life system? Remember that Sonic Team said they felt a need to take it further? Well, they have... in Sonic Adventure. Not only will the inhabitants in the game become your friends or enemies depending on what you do, but you can even build relationships with them when you're on the road... nifty!

More Pictures from the Sonic Forum - 6:20 am EST
Seth C
Here are 10 more screen-shots snagged during the third Sonic forum by yours truly. The game looked absolutely gorgeous. There were some scenes in particular that impressed me. The helicopter coming down over Sonic would have to be one of them. Also, when the camera was following Sonic through the rainforest and the branches from trees were brushing by the camera.... wow. This game will truly be the platformer all others will be judged by.

Sonic's New Friend - 5:40 am EST
Seth C
This is Sonic's new buddy! I'm not quite sure as of yet *what* he is, other than a rather large blue... thing. He's playable, in addition to Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy!

Sonic Forum - Extra Broadcast! - 4:30 am EST
Seth C
The third Sonic Forum is now beginning. People are still taking their seats so if you go now, you can see the whole thing. The transmission is MUCH less crowded, so you may want to watch even if you saw it the first time. Just head here.

Sonic VMS - 4:00 am EST
Seth C
This is something that was previously left unmentioned. Even Sonic Adventure will take advantage of the Dreamcast's PDA unit! What effect it will have, I really couldn't tell you, but it's interesting anyway. From the looks of it, it's some sort of love simulator?

Early Pictures! - 3:45 am EST
Seth C

These shots are all from the early parts of the conference. Pictures from further in will be available a bit later. We're also hoping Sega of Japan will release higher quality pictures and video sometime today. These images came from KEDGE so be sure to check there for more.

Sonic Forum Details - 3:25 am EST
Seth C
This will be a brief re-cap of the entire show. It opened up with Mr. Irimajiri speaking about the system. Once he was done, a long video played with a female voice advertising the console. It showed the VMS unit and artwork of children carrying them and playing with them. After this, the two hosts for the evening came out and spoke a bit. Loud music begin playing shortly after, and Mr. Yuji Naka was introduced. He first showed a video that told all about Sonic Team's trip to South America, then the show got interesting. Various videos were played with tons of Sonic Adventure footage. This went on for about 20 minutes... then the show really began. Naka-san took out a Dreamcast system and put the Sonic Adventure disc in and gave the hosts an opportunity to actually play the game. After that was done, Mr. Saturn came out and began screaming "Sonic-ku!" repeatedly. He did this for about 5 minutes, trying to get the crowd in to it. The band then played the Sonic Adventure theme song and everyone said their goodbyes. We will be back in a moment with details on the actual footage.

Sonic has Come - 3:00 am EST
Seth C
This had to be one of the most enjoyable moments of my short life. The show was absa-freakin-lutely incredible. There was tons of Sonic footage, and even Mr. Saturn made an appearance. There will be more updates shortly, so stay tuned.

Sonic is Coming! - 4:40 pm EST
Seth C
This picture is Sonic Team's way of reminding you that Sonic is coming... and coming soon. The Sonic Forum unvieling is tonight! If you visit often, you know that the show will be broadcast live. Check out yesterday's news for more info on that. All of us will be watching, and we suggest that you do, too!

Sega Logo on the DC - 4:30 pm EST
Seth C
This is news that I'm sure is music to more than a few ears. Take a look at this picture of a collection of Dreamcasts... notice the Sega logo right on the front of each and every one of them! It just adds that certain extra something and shows that Sega will go ahead and revitalize their name instead of avoiding it. Also there are some changes with the DC control pad. First, the analog pad seems to be more encompassed than before, giving it a more sturdy look. And second, the DC logo has been added to the top of each pad.

Video Systems Plans for DC - 4:00 pm EST
Seth C
In a recent press release, Video Systems announced their plans to support the Dreamcast. Their current title, FIA Formula One World Championship for the N64, is to be ported to DC and will be released sometime next year. There is no word on who will be publishing the title.

Sonic Adventure Broadcast Live - 8:00 pm EST
Seth C
Yesterday Sega of Japan announced that the Sonic Forum will be broadcast live over the internet. There will actually be two showings in Japan, the second of which will be broadcast live tomorrow at around 9:30pm Pacific, or 12:30am Eastern. You'll need the RealPlayer to watch. Once you have that, head over to this site to see the show.

Sonic Adventure Theme - 6:00 pm EST
Seth C
A couple of days ago Sonic Team released the theme song from Sonic Adventure. It's available in three formats, but each time I've tried the mp3 version it's been very jumpy, hopefully someone else will have a bit more luck. The song itself is pretty cool with lots of guitar and even English vocals.
.WAV (3.5 megs) .AIF (3.5 megs) .MP3 (2.5 megs)

It's Sonic... but it's FMV - 5:20 pm EST
Seth C
Yesterday, along with the other Sonic Adventure shots, was a screen with a monster of some sort coming through a building. It was believed to be just a mistake, not included with Sonic... but a picture of some other game. Today though, Sonic Team posted a picture of that same monster. It's the first official shot of Sonic, but alas, it's only FMV.

Microsoft Gets Busy - 6:10 pm EST
Seth C
It seems that every day Microsoft steps forward with a larger involvement with the Dreamcast. Today we find out that they are in the process of developing Urban Assault for the DC. Not only that, but Outwars and Microsoft Golf are also under consideration.

Four From Midway - 4:25 pm EST
Seth C
Midway had already announced that they would be bringing two titles to the Dreamcast, NFL Blitz and Mortal Kombat 4. Now they are bringing two others: Rampage World Tou and an MK Mythologies style adventure game. Seems that Midway likes the system.

Sonic Pictures are Real - 1:00 pm EST
Seth C
Game-Online heard from reliable sources that these pictures are real, as I first suspected. So now it's time for a sort of "public service announcement" about the pictures. First, let me say that these shots are very very old. In the first picture, there were serious glitches with the lighting/shadows, and in the third shot there are a LOT of jagged edges. Both of these just shouldn't be. But these shots were taken with the same dev. kit we've been hearing about for months that uses only 66% of the system's power. The pictures that we will see in few days won't at all look like these... prepare to be surprised.

This brings me to my second point. Why now, why so close to the press conference, would Sonic Team let pictures slip from their grasp? Maybe, just maybe, it was purposely. They knew a lot of hype had been surrounding this game... but had expectations become too high? Perhaps they felt if they released a handful of very old, outdated images, everyone's expectations would decrease and then they could wow us completely with the game as it will REALLY look. Just my theory...

Freak Server Accident - 12:35 pm EST
Seth C
Today, as we were trying to do a news update, a very unlucky thing happened. Our server decided it didn't like us and showed it by deleting the entire news page! Sadly, the news is backed up about once per week, and it just so happened that the last update was a week ago, so all news from the 11th to the 17th is lost.

Sonic Adventure Pics... Maybe - 10:25 pm EST
Seth C
If you've followed Dreamcast for any reasonable amount of time, you realize how many faked images have come and gone. Pictures that people claimed were images of various Dreamcast games. Now these pictures surface on a French gaming site... but are they real? The first two pictures (above) make it hard to tell. In the first one, the fire looks very much like that from various PVRSG screens, which lends to the credibility. But Sonic appears to be "pasted" on top of the screen... notice the way he seems to stand on the light eminating from the fire.... not very realistic. But then I saw the third image...

The image of Tails sold me. I also posted an image that was available back in June. When the picture on the right became available no one could be sure if it was Sonic because the quality was so poor. But now this image of Tails has arrived.. and take notice that the two screens are from the EXACT same spot in the game. The light post is there, the windows on the buildings have the exact same setup. It's just a bit too much to try and fake.

Keep in mind though, even if these pictures ARE real (and I do believe they are), they are quite old. The first picture, as I said, was available in June... these pictures are almost certainly from the same source, taken at about the same time... which makes them over 2 months old. This would explain the lack of edge anti-aliasing, because the PVRSG chipset wasn't finished at that time.

Treasure Shows Interest - 4:05 pm EST
Seth C
Treasure's President, Maegawa-san, recently spoke with Sega Saturn Magazine concerning the company's future. Not suprisingly, the conversation turned to the Dreamcast. Here is a bit of the conversation:

"The other day Sega announced the Dreamcast and we are certainly interested in that. We definitely intend to keep making lots of Sega games.... the hardware specification is very good.... At the moment, the Dreamcast has the highest specifications of any console available and that's interesting. It's an exceptionally good piece of hardware.."

This isn't too surprising, Treasure has always been fond of Sega. If you want to check out more of the interview, head on over to Sega-Otaku.

World League Soccer 2000 - 3:55 pm EST
Seth C
Silicon Dreams recently confirmed that not only are they a Dreamcast developer, but their first title is already in the works. That game just happens to be World League Soccer 2000. The game is expected to release late next year in Europe, which should be in perfect timing with the system's launch.

Dreamcast Gets Blitzed - 3:45 pm EST
Seth C
Midway's arcade smash NFL Blitz is already being prepared for the Dreamcast. Not only will the Dreamcast version be upgraded from the upcoming PSX and N64 games, but it will even go further than the soon to be released NFL Blitz 99 in the arcades.

Spawn is Headed Our Way - 3:30 pm EST
Seth C
Todd McFarlane was at the SanDiego ComiCon that was recently held, and was speaking of various things in Spawn's immediate future. One of those things just so happened to be a new game in the works for the Dreamcast. Then Terry Fitzgerald gave some details... here is what he had to say:

"the gameplay will be unsurpased and blow you away... at any given time there will be at least 3,000,000 polygons on the screen, on simple scenes that is, we are looking at about 5,000,000 on more complex scenes, with a very impresive framerate."

5 million polygons per second?? That's almost insane.... wow. Let's only hope the game plays better than previous Spawn titles.

The Drought is Over - 3:25 pm EST
Seth C
We know that news has been unbearably slow for days now. It annoys us as much as it does you. But finally things are picking up, so expect tons of updates starting now. There is some info on a new Spawn title for the Dreamcast, as well as some other goodies. And don't forget, Sonic is a mere three days away!

Unreal Cross-Platform - 3:10 pm EST
Seth C
Unreal seems to be the hot topic of the day, and as such I thought I should bring to view something Mark Rein said in his recent interview with Next Generation. You see, the conversation led to him speaking about Epic's plans to make Unreal compatible across multiple platforms. What this means is that they want you, the future Dreamcast users of America, to be able to play against PC Unreal players. Considering both platforms run off a version of Windows, this shouldn't be all that difficult. Especially once you realize Unreal on the Dreamcast will utilize the exact same engine as it's PC brother, unlike Saturn ports such as Duke Nukem which have seperate engines. There will be point to point gaming, but cross-platform play over the internet would be hard to work out because each system has its own dedicated gaming servers.

PenPen Underwater - 2:50 pm EST
Seth C

Now this is something we hadn't seen before... PenPen underwater. These screens are just one of many environments that will be showcased in the game. So far we have seen a barren landscape with mountains, snow covered fields, and now water. Where is the lush green tropical rainforest? Don't forget that the game also features both day and night racing. I think once we see the game in motion, we'll all be very pleased. Thanks go to Sega-Holic for bringing these shots to us. Don't forget to check out our preview of PenPen Triathlon for all the new underwater pics.

Unreal Engine on Dreamcast - 1:10 pm EST
Seth C
Next-Generation Online is reporting that they have heard from reliable sources that the Unreal engine is already up and running on the Dreamcast development kit. We already told you how Epic's VP, Mark Rein, felt about the system, so this news really doesn't come as a big suprise to us. But, it is very good news. Not only does that open the door for Unreal, but also every game which uses the Unreal engine. One of those games is Duke Nukem Forever, which will be a very big title when it releases.

Aussie's Living in a Dream World? - 1:00 pm EST
Seth C
Triple J, a national radio station in Australia recently announced that Dreamcast will launch there this November. Apparently quite a few Japanese companies have been testing their products in nearby Australia before bringing them to the US and Europe.

Wondering Why Updates are Slow? - 9:10 pm EST
Seth C
Yes I know there were no updates to the site over the weekend. There are two reasons for this. Number One, there was no news to report. Sad but true. The Sonic Unvieling does grow ever closer though, so stay tuned for that. Reasons Number Two.... Shining Force 3! This game is excellent. If you don't have it, get it. Be sure to check for my review of the game on our sister site, GameNET sometime next week. Anyway, regular updates will resume tomorrow.

3D0's Aggressions - 10:55 pm EST
Seth C
If you read the news yesterday, you saw that 3D0 does not want to have a part in the Dreamcast. It seems that staying away isn't good enough for them, and they plan to mount a full-scale assault on Sega's and the Dreamcast's credibility. A representative of 3D0 contacted Sega X concerning this screen shot of Monster Breed. Their claims were that this HAD to be pre-rendered CG because it's impossible that the Dreamcast could create the effect of a monster casting a shadow on itself. 3D0 is obviously wrong, as evidenced by the Godzilla shots Sega themselves have put forth. It's quite sad that a company would be in such a poor position (are you jealous, Trip?) to go to such lengths to bash a system (and do it unsuccessfully I might add).

Does Sony Fear for it's Very Existance? - 4:40 pm EST
Seth C
The current talk around the industry is that Sony is planning to try and "nullify" the Dreamcast's launch on November 20 with some form of announcement of their own. Possibly they will let pictures of a PSX2 mock-up or box leak to the Japanese media, or there could be an official announcement. This is obviously and painfully an act of absolute terror on the part of Sony. If the announcement is needed, and they have real SOLID details about their upcoming system, then it is all in fair game. But the announcement will most likely be an under-handed load of PR hype and lies conjured up out of the air in an attempt to weaken the sales at the Dreamcast's launch. This is the sort of lowlife business practices put in to effect by Nintendo at the US Sega CD launch and will gain Sony nothing but disrespect.

Sonic Adventure - 4:30 pm EST
Seth C
Let the advertising blitz begin! Sonic Team has released some ads for Sonic Adventure. Although they are more or less ads to build hype for the unvieling, they're still interesting to watch. Check it out for yourself.

Dreamcast's Little Brother - 12:40 am EST
Seth C
This is the Neo Geo Pocket, in a way, it's the Dreamcast' little brother due to the fact that the VMS will be able to interact with the system in some way. The exact specifics on how that will work have not been released, though. The hardware itself looks like a cross between the Game Gear and the Nomad, but with a black & white screen.

The system launches in Japan around October and will be selling at approximately $47 - less than some videogame software!

Tech Special Update - 9:15 pm EST
Seth C
The videos of both the "Tower of Babel" and and the "Shooter" demos were added to the Tech Demo Special today. Keep in mind that these were filmed with handheld camcorders and the quality is very poor. Pictures of these two demos will be added once I can find some of decent quality.

SoE Dreamcast Launch Titles - 8:40 pm EST
Seth C
When a representative at Sega of Europe was questioned concerning the launch titles for Dreamcast, this was his reply:

"I can't really speculate too much on that. Of course everyone will be looking for the big arcade translations but there will also be a lot of totally original titles especially developed with the Dreamcast hardware in mind. We will certainly have the most impressive line up of first generation software ever seen at launch. But don't be surprised to see games like Virtua Fighter 3, D2 and more."

That should bring to a close speculation that Virtua Fighter 3 might not come to Dreamcast.

3D0 Against Dreamcast? - 8:20 pm EST
Seth C
Almost every third party developer on the planet has signed on to work on titles for the Dreamcast. But, 3D0 is so much smarter than everyone else (which constantly shows through in Trip Hawkin's ignorant comments and failed projects) and they are staying away from the system, at least for now. I'm sure that once The 3D0 Company sees everyone buying in to the system they will jump onboard, most likely to watch the system die after many many years of success, at which point they will proclaim the system's dominance and scoff at the companies jumping in bed with "the next big thing".

Fantasy Zone!! - 6:40 pm EST
Seth C
Now THIS is awesome news! There are rumors out of Japan that Sega is at work on a sequel to Fantasy Zone for the Dreamcast!

Fantasy Zone was a cutesy style shooter for the Master System. You flew around collecting gold coins that let you power up your ship. Just imagine if it was in highly detailed 3D so it looked like a living cartoon. Or possibly even a 2D game in 16 million colors. The thought makes me drool.

NiGHTS 2 Becomes Less of a Dream - 6:00 pm EST
Seth C
This is the screen shot that I posted a few days back. Turns out the game just became a bit closer to real. Yuji Naka already stated that he plans to begin work on it as soon as Sonic Adventure is complete. Now details have surfaced about possible play mechanics. The game is rumored to involve more ground based play than the original due to the Dreamcast's advanced 3d abilities.

Lucas Arts and THQ Possibilities - 5:40 pm EST
Seth C
Word is that both Lucas Arts and THQ are considering working on titles for the Dreamcast. THQ's President was impressed with the system. A Lucas Arts representative said that they are in constant communication with Sega but have not decided if they will be working on a title for the system. My guess? You'll see a Star Wars title on the DC.

Lawsuit Settled - 5:35 pm EST
Seth C
If you don't recall, back in September 3DFX filed a lawsuit against Sega, NEC, and VideoLogic. The problem came from the fact that Sega was working on two possible units for the system that eventually became the Dreamcast. One using a chip from 3DFX, and one from NEC/VideoLogic. Sega decided to go with the NEC chipset, and it apparently didn't sit well with 3DFX. The lawsuit has now been settled, altough exact details aren't being released.

First Metropolis Shot - 9:30 pm EST
Seth C
Not quite what you had expected, eh? Well it seems a crafty programmer had a little fun with the game engine. Here is what was said by Bizarre Creations themselves.

"A bit of a worry this week has been the rabbits. We have had an outbreak of rabbits in a Metropolis city, which has caused many problems...... A programmer who shall remain nameless found an old cartoony animation of a rabbit and inserted loads of the little buggers into the city. It looked totally hilarious, especially when the cute little animals hopped bouncily up to and tried to jump off an overhanging bridge!!!"

Slow News Day - 4:35 pm EST
Seth C
If you couldn't tell, it's a slow news day. For that matter, so was yesterday. But we aren't letting the time go by wasted. We're hard at work on a new layout for the main page which I hope everyone will like. Also, we're hard at work interviewing people for the positions we have to fill. We hope you enjoy the changes in store here at DC Extreme.

Tech Demo Special - 3:58 pm EST
Seth C
I recently saw someone ask if we had all the tech demos Sega has displayed. Well, I decided to collect them all in one place to better serve you. There is now a Tech Demo Special which includes both the Irimajiri head demo and SoA's E3 Demo. The Babylon demo will be added tomorrow. Enjoy!

DC Ultima Online? - 3:50 pm EST
Seth C
Game Weekly is reporting a very interesting runor. They think EA has plans to port Ultima Online to the Dreamcast. Not only that, but that EA will set up a dedicated network to let Dreamcast users play the game. Keep in mind though, this is just speculation on the part of Game Weekly.

Sound RAM - 9:45 pm EST
Seth C
In writing the previous news bit, I failed to mention one thing. The Dreamcast also has 2 megs of sound RAM (in addition to the other 24). Sarah Dixon mentioned this in an interview with SegaNet. Special thanks to Ace O'Spades for bringing this to my attention.

Dreamcast RAM Confirmed - 4:15 pm EST
Seth C
Although Sega has only been speaking of the system's 16 megs of "main RAM", that won't stop others from talking. Recently Mark Rein, the Vice President of Epic, spoke concerning the Dreamcast. He had quite a few things to say, and one of those things confirmed what I had known for a long time - The Dreamcast will have 24 megs of RAM in total. When asked if the Dreamcast's ram would be a problem, here is what he said:

"Not really. For a sub-$300 machine it's got plenty of RAM. Twenty-four megs, 8MB VRAM..."

There is your confirmation.

NiGHTS into Dream(Cast??) - 10:40 pm EST
Seth C
Could this be? No surely not... or maybe it is? Those were the thoughts going through my mind when I first laid my eyes on this picture from Next-Generation magazine. This picture was meant to be in the same group with the "Sonic", "Racing", and "Soccer" pictures that were released a little over a month ago. Apparently it evaded the eyes of everyone, but here it is now. It's so blurry that it makes it hard to tell if it's even 3d or just artwork. Only time will tell.

Positions Available - 1:20 pm EST
Seth C
Just a reminder that we do still have positions available. We need both Japanese and European Correspondents. If you are interested, please e-mail me at sethc@se-tel.com. Excellent writing skills are a must.

Climax Rumors - 3:50 am EST
Seth C
What is Climax Entertainment working on for the Dreamcast? Well, there seem to be varying reports. Some claim they have two titles in the works for Sega's fledgling system. One of them a top-secret project, and the other a multi-user online adventure. Other reports say they are working on a fully 3D Action/Adventure game. Could these reports really be overlapping? Is this online game the same as the fully 3D Adventure? We'll have to wait and see.
