DVD and DC
    Source: GameSpot

According to electronic entertainment trade magazine MCV, Sega is positioning the DC as an expandable system due to the flexibility of its Windows OS. The magazine says that a DVD/GD ROM drive Dreamcast is sitting in Sega's offices already.

This basically means that the DC will be able to be upgraded like a PC, making it able to deal with anything Sony or Nintendo throws at it. The downside is that this kind of expandability has never worked in the console market. The consumer has been wary of expansion in the past, specifically the Sega CD and 32X. Expandability may be necessary with the DC's lead time, but it needs to be handled properly for the market to accept it. Only time will tell if this can work or if Sega will even attempt it.
